    First edition, starting time press. Publisher's original green cloth with dark blueish titles and wraparound analogy to the boards and spine, in dustwrapper. Green top-stain. Endpaper maps, frontispiece and ix other black and white illustrations past the author. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the fabric vivid and fresh. The light-green top-stain has faded. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the good original dustwrapper that has short tears to the fold corners, several small fries with loss to the panel edges and larger fries at head (22mm at its deepest) and tail of the darkened spine. The underside has a single piece of clear record at the lower spine fold. Not cost-clipped (7s 6d cyberspace to the forepart flap) and with the hand correction to "Dodgeson" on the rear flap, as called for. Housed in a bespoke, blue cloth solander case. A major high spot of fantasy fiction, first published on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. Tolkien's first novel was an immediate success, selling out within months and a 2d printing hurriedly issued in Dec of the same twelvemonth. The Hobbit has never been out of print, translated into fifty languages and sold over a hundred 1000000 copies worldwide.     Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Expert. 1st Edition. Allen and Unwin 1942. 1st, 3rd printing. Some number of these were damage in a warehouse fire during the WWII. Then few were seen with dust jackets it was thought they were printed without. Arguably more than scarce than a 1st/1st. These were cheaply printed, especially the dust jacket. Few survive in any condition, even if looked subsequently. Book is well-nigh fine, remarkable then. Printed on wartime paper and so the dust jacket appears over-sized. Slight scuffing to cloth corners is the merely flaw. Consummate, original grit jacket, no restoration, simply worse for vesture.
